Nobody ever called him Grandmaster B

Season 6, episode 3, "If Al Had a Hammer," first aired August 30, 1991. Fresh out of Polk High and into junior college, Bud works out that the girls there are never going to go for a kid from the suburbs. So he invents one.

The backstory: a tough street rapper from New York, sent to Chicago after getting into trouble, living with a family he isn't even related to. He may have killed a guy. He can, he claims, kill three different ways from the fetal position.

Peggy listens to the whole thing and points out it's the plot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Bud's answer is that Fresh Prince is on NBC, so nobody watching will notice.

The persona lasted years. The respect never arrived. His family mangled the name every single time, the girls at school were worse, and the only person who ever took Grandmaster B seriously was Bud.

The part that isn't fiction

Grandmaster B exists because David Faustino was genuinely trying to become a rapper while the show was running. In 1992 he released an actual single, "I Told Ya," under the name D' Lil. The writers took the thing he was really doing and built a running joke out of it for the rest of the series.
